If you’re looking to experience a wide range of temperatures and microclimates all in one place, Maui has it all! Thanks to the high mountain peaks and low valleys there is variation across the island in temperatures, foliage and even rainfall. Join us as we explore the two seasons of Maui, kau and hooilo. What are kau and hooilo you asked? Well, your friends at The Pauli Family Condos at Wailea are here to fill you in on the good, the bad and the beautiful when it comes to Maui weather.
Due to Maui’s microclimates weather can be different in Wailea (the sunny south side) vs Hana or Up Country. Even-though our live Maui Weather App can show you current temperatures, remember that is usually the airport in Kahului.
Kau is the sunny season that stretches from May to September. With daytime highs in the mid-80’s and evening lows in the low-70’s, this is a great time to come to the island. The weather is typically drier – although this can depend on where you are on the island.
Hooilo is the rainy cool season that is from October to April. During these months the daytime highs are a bit cooler, only reaching the upper-70’s to low-80’s while nights dip into the low to mid-60’s. This time of year is also when we get the majority of our precipitation with December and January being the rainiest months.
That being said, there is never a bad time to visit Maui! In fact, we’re going to break down the awesome experiences you can have depending on when you decide to travel.
January through March
These winter months are a bit cooler and rainier but don’t let that stop you! After all, you only get rainbows when it’s raining! This time of year is also prime time for whale watching and Maui is home to some of the best spots for viewing these amazing creatures. Each year, humpback whales migrate from the cold waters up north down to the safe warm waters near Maui. If you make it out in January, don’t miss the PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions golf tournament in Kapalua.
April through June
The spring months are a great time to soak in everything there is to see on Maui. With the rainy season out of the way, you can look forward to sunshine and blue skies. Not only is the weather absolutely beautiful but this time of year sees smaller crowds. This could mean lower costs on flights and accommodations for you and your family! Check out fun events like The Maui Film Festival or The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival all happening during the spring months.
July through September
If you’re looking for that warm tropical weather that Hawaii is known for, you’ll want to visit during the summer months. With highs in the 80’s, you can enjoy the land and the sea all day long. This is a great time to scuba, snorkel, hike and enjoy the outdoors. Plus, with tons of events for the whole family, there is a lot to do and see during this time of year. Don’t miss the Aloha Festivals and the Maui Ukulele Festival.
October through December
Maui in the fall is a dream come true. With mainland kids back in school, October and the beginning of November are usually a calm and quiet time on the island. Prices are low and the weather is picturesque, though the rainy season starts to creep in around December. However, even with the increase in rain, once the holidays approach, expect larger crowds as well as higher holiday pricing on everything from your stay to your flight. The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival stretches across the islands for different weeks throughout the season and features delicious food from world-class chefs around the country. If you love shopping locally, the Made in Maui County Festival is the perfect event to find some homemade treasures.
The bottom line is, there is no bad time to visit Maui! The climate is mild year-round and there are tons of great events to experience.
